EBB AND FLOW: DRAWING SOUND: WEEK 3

Photocell, LED circuit

Ebb and Flow: Drawing Sound workshop had its grand third week. Three hours of lab time went by quickly as participants encountering new skills. Dark detecting LED circuit using a photocell resistor was a warm-up project. The circuit required only four main components – 2.2K Ωhm resistor, photocell, LED and NPN 2N 3904. A photocell is a light-dependent resistor that its resistance varied by the amount of light it is exposed to. If the amount of light increases, free electrons conduct electricity lowering resistance. But without NPN transistor, the LED in the circuit will get brighter with more light in an environment. NPN 2N 3904 is a type of bipolar transistor that amplifies or switches electronic signals and power. For the circuit for our project, NPN will turn on the LED in the dark when photocell’s resistance is up in increments opening up electric flow from the current to the emitter. Emergency lights and streetlights are good examples from our surrounding. Some artists generate interactive elements using various resistance values from a photocell. This set of data (inputs) could manipulate audios, images, or videos (outputs) processed by a software interface designed by an artist(s).

This week was the most challenging of all. The participants had to familiarize with reading schematic, direction of electric current, Ωhm values of resistors, the polarity of each part and more. We tested the circuit on a mini breadboard before soldering into a piece. If the LED did not turn on while photocell is in the dark, we needed to troubleshoot instances of errors. It could be malfunctioning parts, drained batteries, or wrong connections. One participant actually burnt LED light due to a strong current went straight to the LED before passing through the resistor. “Hello World” the right of passage was performed. You cannot learn a thing without breaking and banging. Persistent souls successfully soldered up the parts and jumped onto a case design.  They proudly interacted with darkness sensing LED, their first interactive DIY electronic piece, taking selfies and recording videos.

*Our last class was mentioned in the Korea Times – USA.

EBB AND FLOW: DRAWING SOUND: WEEK 2

In week two, participants learned about STEM and STEAM education and the importance of art education in contexts of cultural as well as social development. In Untitled print from 1973, Nam June Paik asked

Nam June Paik, Untitled, 1973
  1. How soon TV-chair will be available in most museums?
  2. How soon will artists have their own TV channels?
  3. How soon wall-to-wall TV for video art will be installed in most homes?

We discussed the current examples that functioned like the objects he described. The list went on – Photobooth Kiosk, Cellphone selfie, iPad interactive learning tool, Podcast, self-publishing website, Youtube, Vimeo, and Digital picture frame. Park’s untitled piece was one of the examples how could art brings potentialities for unknown future. Ken Okiishi’s painted flat TV called Gesture/Data, 2013 brought out the idea that emotional intelligence machine is no longer a science fiction. The actual painted abstract expressionistic brushstrokes covered a representational image emitting from the screen. The vertical orientation is also referencing the intimacy inherent to a portraiture. This physical flatness expresses emotion.

Earlier in the class, we introduced each other and shared what motivated them to take this workshop. They were curious to know a concept of sound in visual art, and how do interactive artworks operate which they had seen in museums and galleries. We looked at specifically women artists with technology who use electronics and sound to get their ideas across to viewers – Roopa Vasudevan, Jung-In Jung, Jayoung Chung, and Sam Lewitt who turned invisible energy to visible number through custom-designed flexible copper heating circuits.

We also looked at more utilitarian projects by individual makers. From Farmbot, $9 Computer, Bluetooth smart device and $60 DIY home laser cutter, these inventions ensued from the open-source culture which eventually intervened mass market price structure, consumer behavior, and value system.

We finished the STEAM presentation with 5000 years old concept from Gojoseon dynasty which is also  Korean National education philosophy. (Hong-Ik-In-Gan) is composed of Chinese characters WIDE, BENEFIT and MANKIND.

We made our first interactive circuit during the lab time. With 2.2K  Ωhm resistor, LED, and Photocell, we soldered each part made a circuit that controls the brightness of LED based on the amount of light coming into the Photocell. Soldering is not a ubiquitous activity. They struggled when connecting two soldered parts though they learned fast with curiosity.

EBB and FLOW: Drawing Sound

EBB AND FLOW: DRAWING SOUND: WEEK 1

OK GO뮤직비디오 This Too Shall Pass는 로스엔젤라스에 있는 메이커스렙Syyn과의 공동 작품이다. 이번 여름 구겐하임에서 회고전을 한 피터 피실과 데이비드 웨스의 작품 The Way Things Go 는 OK GO 에게 큰 영감을 주었다.

Jung Hee Mun begins the workshop with the 1st Industrial Revolution depicted by Harun Farocki’s Workers leaving the Factory (1995), It is a remix video including “La sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyo (1895)” by Auguste and Louis Lumière brother. Then the 2nd Industrial Revolution during late 18th to early 19th century, Diego Rivera’s mural  standing at Detroit Industry north wall glorifies the labors working in a mass, accordance with factory automation infrastructure. The world is now at the end of the Digital and Electronics revolution of the 20th century. As modes of production changes, people’s lives have shaped by the external structures. Standardizing modes of production and communication obscure subjectivity and power of individuals. With the advent of the Internet, makers reach out through instances of fiber optic cable across the continents only to make, to learn and to share collectively. A TED talk by Massimo Banzi, a founder of Arduino. Banzi introduces concepts behind open-source imagination. Open-source is source codes for software and hardware made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. The Makers Movement and Open-Source culture are paving the ideas that we are all artist, engineer, scientist, mathematician, and designer. The breadths of makers are ubiquitous in our culture. For example, Ok GO’s music video, This Too Shall Pass, is a collaborative effort with Syyn Labs, a maker collective and digital fabrication lab based in Los Angeles. Ok Go’s artistic lineage comes from a work of Peter Fischli and David Weiss’s The Way Things Go whom just had a retrospective show at Guggenheim Museum. The makers, a part Do It Yourself (DIY) movement that is as deep as the decision to control a mode of production and as light as for the pure joy of making. Through the presentation, Participants are being able to access critically of why we are here learning about electronic interactive arts and multimedia as a joint expression in a context of the technological era. In our third hour, the participants learn basic soldering skill and a note of caution. They practice desoldering techniques and get familiar with necessary materials for a safe working environment.
