In this workshop, students will learn the techniques of traditional Korean bookmaking and investigate the idea of a book as an object to build a unique visual journal. Students will create paintings on Korean rice paper during the first half of the course. During the second half, they will bind them in an art journal using traditional Korean techniques. At the end of the course the students will exhibit their finished art journals and share their results.

Seongmin Ahn received an M.F.A. in Asian traditional painting from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea and an M.F.A from Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work takes Asian traditional painting as starting point and transforms it into something experimental with personal interpretations working to bridge tradition with our milieu, and East with West. She has been awarded the prestigious Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, and won first place at the 2013 AHL Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Competition. Her work has been reviewed by The Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, NY Arts magazine, the Baltimore Sun, and the Plain Dealer and she has exhibited locally and internationally, in Wilmington, New York, Baltimore, and Seoul.
