MUSIC TRADITIONS FROM EGYPT & SYRIA. WEEK 2

On the second class was joined by percussionist Rami ElAasser http://ramitabla.com/ who taught us the basics of Arabic Rhythms.  We learned how to produce the basic sounds on the drums – “dum” and “tek.”  We learned several rhythmic patterns (called “iqaa” in Arabic), including “maqsoum,” “beladi,” and “wihda” – all different variations on 4-beat rhythms.  We practiced singing and playing, using the songs “Ghannily Shwayya” and “Min Hubbi Fiik Ya Gaari.”  We also sang through the maqamat known as “Rast” and “Nahawand,” comparing the 3rd scale degree, which is lower in Nahawand.
A reminder, all the songs used in class, as well as the syllabus, can be downloaded at: https://app.box.com/s8e6hjyxqspnfpnfx45voie6rpt1y2epg
Next week, we’ll focus on the Egyptian film tradition, and watch some clips from the 1940’s and 50’s.
