Queridos New New Yorkers,

  • Visita Museo Leslie Lohman of Gay and Lesbian Art:

Dear New New Yorkers,

In this session 3 of our course, we have seen the progress that all of you have had on each photo submitted this week. This is due hard work, effort and dedication that each of you has put in the moment of making them. Congratulations, for adding knowledge and applying them effectively in your weekly assignments!

Specially congratulations for taking the time to be artists and enjoying being artist;  as we can see in a comment from your classmate Mrs. Graciela Orjuela: “Until now I had painted on canvas or paper with the help of pigments, brushes and other ingredients; but with the classes of the teacher Sol I have corroborated that photography if it is to paint with light; Since with this we can create special and different moments, since it gives movement, depth, fluidity, color and dynamics to the objects photographed. Light in conjunction with time, also modify and enrich what is being photographed. ”

In this session we saw several new concepts that will help us when taking our photographs.
1. Shutter speed.

The speed = is the time the diaphragm is open. The teacher suggested we compare the diaphragm with a curtain, which if more open time could “paint” the picture.

  1. Depth of field.

It is the area of the image that is in focus, in contrast to other areas of less focus. It’s the whole range of what is focused on our photo in front and behind our focus primarily.

  1. Bokeh.

It is an optical effect, in which the background lights appear out of focus. Finally we did a practice in class taking photos with colored lights in the background, to create the Bokeh effect in our photographs.

Homework for Monday, June 12:

Choose a poem or a song in Spanish 4-5 lines and take 4-5 inspired pictures in each line. You will have to “put together” the photo. The title of each photo will be the line of the verse or song chosen. Avoid making the photo literally; try to think more about what the lyrics  says.

Important announcements :

  • The next class Monday, June 12, we will visit a Museum, for that reason we will NOT go to the library, otherwise we will meet at the door of the 10am Museum.
  • Visit Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art:
