Week 2: DIY in Spanish: Mastery

During this class we reviewed the kids game tutorial developed in the previous class, then focused on this weeks topic: mastery. Last, we had a special guest Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo who talked to us about her experience as an artist.

When reviewing the photo tutorial we made sure to provide constructive criticism and establish key leanings. Some of the learnings were the following:

  • Horizontal or vertical orientation. We discussed the advantages of horizontal over vertical. But overall we establish the rule that once we choose an orientation we cannot change it.
  • Establish an emotional connection with our audience. This is the importance of introducing oneself as a character of our tutorial.
  • We reviewed lighting. Discussing the importance to use natural lighting, if available. When using natural lighting to choose the most bright location and avoid shades.
  • We then talked about mastery and how each one of has a very distinct and unique life experience and knowledge and the importance of identifying things we love. Even if the knowledge isn’t unique if we find things that we enjoy making there will most likely be someone else that will like to learn about it.

Finally Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo talked to us about her work as an artist. Cynthia described her approach to photography and the importance of slowness. Her point of view got students very excited. She went into her methods to engaging artist audiences by asking their attention. Cynthia discussed she liked to go back to work with analog material by combining different photos in a collage style to move elements of a scene very slowly.

Cynthia has an art project called Cross Urban, this is a photography collaboration with Klaus Fruchtnis in which they choose a word from Merriam Webster’s “word of the day” and take an image inspired by this word. She has been doing that for sometime.

The day of the class the word was oblivion “olvido” in Spanish. I asked the class as an assignment to take an image inspired by the definition of this word.

We were all very inspired and impressed by Cynthia’s point of view and work.
