Music Tradition from Syria and Egypt Week 7

The class reviewed all of the concepts explored in the previous classes, comparing the mood of the different maqams (melodic modes) in the songs “Min Hubbi Fiik Ya Gaari” and “ish-showq mihayyarni.”  We reviewed some of the rhythmic patterns used in Arabic Music.  We compared the context of Syrian traditional music – which maintained a continuity of repertory from the 19th century and earlier – to 20th century Egyptian music – which saw innovations in song form and new compositions for contemporary media (radio and film in particular).  We watched film clips of Naima Akif dancing in movie musicals from the 1950’s, and sang through portions of the songs covered in previous classes.
