ESL for Mandarin Speakers – week 1

 Introduction of the first class:
No doubt many of you have felt that English is too difficult for you to be learned, primarily spoken English. This 6-week program is starting today. I will teach you some essential daily use words, phrases, and sentences so that you can say or understand others.

Today we will learn how to say basic politeness phrases. I will give out 1-2 pages of handouts for you to study, practice, and memorize.  The handouts have three versions on each page: English, Chinese Pin Yin, and Chinese characters. It’s easier for you to study and practice at home.

Please look at your handouts and tell me:      what the first phrase is…  follow me to say ….please repeat three times.

Theme: Introductions

Your first lesson focuses on the verb “to be,” which will help students to begin discussing basic questions. The revised language items will include the following:

  • The verb “to be”
  • Revision of possessive adjectives: my, your, her, his
  • Basic greetings

The new language items introduced will include:

  • The use of names of countries
