In this 6-week long workshop, participants will work closely with artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed to create an archive about their personal or local history in the form of zines (often small print pamphlets made with simple materials like pen, paper, scissors and photocopiers) using different drawing, collage, and writing techniques. An archive is a collection of important objects that have been saved over time. They can contain many different things like photos, letters, documents, business records and objects.
Participants will also learn about the history of zines and self-publishing by looking at Kameelah’s artwork and other artists. We will provide some basic materials and will ask participants to bring in their own personal materials (for example, photographs, drawings, magazines clippings and writing) to create their zines.
Kameelah Janan Rasheed (b.1985, East Palo Alto, CA) is an artist-archivist who works in between visual art and writing. She is interested in how different people create stories about their histories. Using found and original materials, Kameelah creates zines, books and large installations that collect and connect words, everyday personal objects, and photos. Kameelah will be part of an exhibition at the Queens Museum opening in October.

Este taller tiene una duración de 6 semanas, los participantes trabajarán en estrecha colaboración con la artista Kameelah Janan Rasheed, creando un archivo sobre su historia personal en forma de “Zines” pequeños folletos impresos hechos con materiales simples como lapiceros, papel, tijeras y fotocopiadoras. Es un trabajo que se hace utilizando diferentes técnicas como dibujo, collage y textos. Estos “Zines” son una colección de objetos importantes que se han guardado en el tiempo. Pueden contener muchas cosas diferentes, como fotos, cartas, documentos, avisos de revistas y también objetos.
Los participantes aprenderán sobre la historia de los “Zines” y auto-publicación, lo que se hará observando la obra de Kameelah y de otros artistas. Ofreceremos algunos materiales básicos y pediremos a los participantes traer sus propios materiales personales para crear sus “Zines”, cosas como fotografías, dibujos, recortes de revistas, etc.
Kameelah Janan Rasheed ( n.1985, East Palo Alto, CA) es una artista que trabaja con textos e imágenes encontradas. En su búsqueda, ella se interesa en cómo las personas son capaces de crear historias sobre sus propias historias. Su obra mezcla el uso de materiales encontrados con otros más bien únicos. Así, Kameelah crea sus “Zines”, que pueden ser libros o grandes instalaciones que recogen y conectan palabras con fotos y objetos cotidianos.
