ESL for Mandarin Speakers – week 4

June 7 – Week 4
This week was a very small class due to poor air quality but we were able to work more one on one. We talked about our group projects and individual projects and continued on the writing and research involved.

In the second half of class, we talked a little bit about letters and how to format them and common English language salutations and signatures. Our project for the day was to choose a local politician advocating for an issue that you care about in your community. As an example, I wrote to congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortes about protecting funding for the Queens Library System.

Everyone looked up a representative to write to and their office. Many people in class are from the same neighborhoods that are represented by NY State Senator Jessica Ramos. This exercise was important because in learning English you can advocate for yourselves and your community. Everyone created a letter or postcard that they could choose to actually send to their representative’s office. We discussed various issues that our city and Queens in general face. Public safety while on the subway, unlicensed street food vendors, and the need for more social services. I will see you tomorrow for our next class.

We will do another project check in and talk about News, Media, and Journalism.
