Course Description and Objectives

In this workshop, students will not only learn the techniques of traditional Korean bookmaking but also reinvestigate the idea of book to build their unique visual journal.
First students will draw a series of ink painting in a subject given by an instructor on Korean rice paper and then using these drawings they will make their art journal by learning the process of traditional Korean bookbinding step by step.
This course will teach basic techniques of traditional Asian ink painting by focusing on the Four Gentlemen drawing (orchid, bamboo, plum and chrysanthemum). Students will then explore and apply these vocabularies to create their own abstract paintings in conjunction with their story in everyday life.
Materials and techniques include working with rice paper, Korean ink, Korean brush and backing (part of scroll making process - Asian traditional mounting with flour glue).
